Notes
This Uthmani Qur’an is attributed to the master calligrapher Hafez Uthman (died 1698) and is written in the style of his teacher, Sheikh Hamdallah. The opening pages are richly gilded, with the titles of the surahs written in thuluth script on a rectangular gold background. A multi-coloured floral arrangement forms a frame bordered by a broken line. The text is surrounded by a dense band and a group of flowered units. Even more richness is found in the box with a lid decorated in the Rococo style with silk and metallic thread. In the middle is the tughra or royal seal of Sultan Abdul Majid (18619-1823).
