Notes
The mirror box is signed in the distinctive form (two meters of Muhammad Baqir) “The Most Modest Muhammad Baqir” and dated 1174 AH, corresponding to 1760/1761 AD. Muhammad Baqir is one of the most famous Persian artists of the eighteenth century. He was a student of Muhammad Ali Ashraf (active 1134-1190 AH / 1722-1777 AD) and worked in the 1750s on the frames of the so-called St. Petersburg Album. This mirror box is undoubtedly one of his first independent works. Mohamed Baqir's works include framed paintings for albums, single-sheet drawings, and lacquer works. A striking feature of his art is his fascination with the works of famous Safavid artists such as Muhammad Zaman (active ca. 1072-1105 AH / ca. 1662-1694 AD) and Ali Quli Jabbadar/Jabbadar (active 1059-1086 AH / 1649-1675 AD) whose works he copied or used as inspiration for his own creations. This is also the case with the three figurative panels of this mirror box. Thus, the woman bathing half-naked with a red towel sitting on a small rock can be compared to Muhammad Zaman's drawing of Shirin bathing in Khams dated to 1674/75 AD.
