Notes
Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi was the greatest Islamic Sufi. He was born in Murica, Spain, in 1165 AD, and after many journeys, he ended up in Damascus in 1240. He was a very prolific writer, and his followers spread his teachings, which reached Iran and India, although his influence was greatest in Anatolia. His tomb in Damascus was restored by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I, whose seal appears on page 1a of this manuscript. This volume is probably the fourth of a six-volume set and was transcribed by the same author. At the end of the manuscript there is a note stating that the manuscript was read aloud to the author in his home in Damascus in several sessions, the last of which was on Sunday the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the year 634 (August 1237). The other note, which is barely legible in the author’s handwriting, says that he personally approved the text in his office, as shown here.
