Notes The outside of the cover is depicted with three pairs of mares displayed in various stages of flirtatious foreplay and set against a background of European-style trees and buildings. There are two female musicians on the right side. There is a bright bird and a flower drawn against a background of gold leaves and located inside the cover. The edges/sides of the case are depicted with four European-inspired landscapes separated by half-portraits in oval medallions. The red base is painted with coils of vines in gold. The surface of the cover bears a signature and date, but they appear to have been deliberately obliterated. Although the name Muhammad and the word Sana are what have survived until now, in the 1970s the entire signature was read by Shahrayar Adli (signed by Haji Muhammad), that is, drawn by Haji Muhammad, and the date is considered to be the year 1124. In his study of this box of pens, Shahrayar Adli showed that the three pairs represent the victory of platonic love over lust.
