Notes
This room in Damascus, which dates back to the Ottoman era, represents the luxurious lifestyle in Ottoman Syria. Hospitality has always been fundamental to the Muslim way of life and a room like this was intended to be a guesthouse for important guests. This room is considered a hall because of its spaciousness and distinctive decoration from the rooms of the house. The room itself is made of painted wood panels that will form the floor, four walls, and ceiling, with many flowers, fruits, and architectural scenes painted on it. It is ornately decorated with designs inspired by Islamic, Chinese, and European traditions. The wood panels and ceilings used in the interior design are decorated with stucco relief called “Ajami” which are elements dressed in tin sheets, glazed and painted to form a complex harmony of reflective or matte and intensely colored surfaces. On the ceiling there are three decorations resembling chandeliers.
