Notes After the Islamic conquests of Syria and Iran, the Muslims found that they needed to adopt the monetary system of these countries, so they imitated the Byzantine gold coins and the Sassanid silver coins. The coins of the Arab Sassanian style, known as Pahlavi, are distinguished by the presence of Arabic inscription and the image of the Sassanian king on the obverse of the coin, and the altar surrounded by two priests on the back of the coin. This Umayyad dirham was minted in the Sassanian style during the time of Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (reigned in the period 65-86 / 685-705). The face of the dirham shows a bust of the Sassanian king Yazdegerd III, bearded and wearing a winged crown on his head. In the bottom margin the phrase "In the Name of God" appears. As for the back of the piece, it appears to be depicted with a depiction of a fire altar above three steps surrounded by two servants (altar custodians) within three concentric circles. To the right of the drawing appears an abbreviation of the name of the city of al-Darb, which is Darbjard, and to the left of the drawing appears the year of al-Darb written in Pahlavi script, which is the year 60 according to the Yazdjardi calendar, corresponding to the year 72 AH.
