Notes
This rectangular silk cloth has the design of bands in the form of insignia of military ranks, which contain layout inscriptions (in thirds) with verses from the Qur’an containing a supplication to God and the phrase martyrdom or declaration of faith to the Muslim. This type of cloth covers important Ottoman graves and is reminiscent of the kiswa fabrics woven in similar designs but on a much larger scale, which were sent annually by the Ottoman Sultan to the Kaaba in Mecca.
