Notes In sixteenth-century Iran, single-page paintings became common. These were cheaper to produce and therefore cheaper than manuscripts containing many illustrations. More common were portraits of young aristocratic figures, standing alone, delicately executed in full color such as this example from around 1600, the work of Reza Abbasi, who signed the painting in the lower left section. The stocky young man is holding a bottle, which is probably a drink bottle. The young man wears an elaborately made fur hat and wears ordinary pants.
