Notes
A carved wooden tablet that was part of the sarcophagus of Fakhr al-Din Abu al-Tahir Ismail, an officer in the service of the Ayyubid Sultan al-Malik al-Adil, who ruled 596-615/1200-1218. The surface of the tablet was divided into smaller panels of different sizes, one long continuous one at the top, and seven smaller ones below it. Each panel was carved with arabesques, and the spaces between them were filled with inscriptions containing verses. From the Qur’an and expressions of blessing. The date of the tablet is mentioned in the lower part of it. This panel is considered an important example of the reuse of materials in Islamic art, as the back part of it was engraved with decorations belonging to the Tulunid period (254-92 / 868-905).
