Notes Babur, Humayun's father, was a direct descendant of the 14th century Turkic Mongol ruler called Timur. Babur was the founder of the Mongol Empire (1526-1858) in the Indian subcontinent, known as Hindustan throughout the Persian-speaking world. He was the first ruler to encourage artistic communication between Central Asia, Iran and India. He felt a special respect for Timurid art and cultural heritage and invited some Iranian artists to join his court, who were later followed by artists from Bukhara. (today Uzbekistan).
