Notes
This is part of one of the most luxurious Qur’ans ever produced, commonly known as the Blue Qur’an. It contains verses 267-273 of Surat Al-Baqarah within 15 lines of Kufic script in gold ink on parchment paper dyed with blue indigo. The widespread use of brush strokes is evidence of the use of underlining with unpointed points on this page. The layout style of this page is characterized by the letter Ha in the form of a semicircle resting on a vertical straight line. There are no diacritics above or below the vowels, and there are no visible dots to distinguish between letters of the same form. As on other pages of the Blue Qur’an, the decoration of this page is minimal, with a slightly faded and oxidized silver rosette that forms the end of each verse. While the groups of ten verses were marked with a seventeen-petaled silver flower design with an inscription in the middle that showed the number of the particular verse, as the inscription on this page says that the number is “seventy-two.”
