Notes
This photo documents the flooding of the Grand Mosque in Mecca after heavy rains in 1952. The Kaaba is captured in the center of the photo, surrounded by the Grand Mosque, with its minarets extending in the background. Mecca and the Kaaba have seen several floods throughout history, such as in 1941, 1913, or long before that in 1727 and 1728. Unfortunately, the flood weakened the interior architecture. During Hajj, which is one of the pillars of Islam, worshipers perform tawaf around the Kaaba several times. Rare cases have been recorded of worshipers performing Tawaf by swimming. Among these is Abdullah Al-Zubair, one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (may God bless him and grant him peace).
