Notes
Among the most noteworthy pieces in the museum's collection of Iznik pottery is this plate with a tree pattern in the central area and a zigzag band around the edge. This plate dates back to the beginning of the seventeenth century and provides an accurate example of the painting in what is known as the "saz" style. It is based on a large serrated/toothed leaf of a special shape. The dish is characterized by the craftsmanship of painting on a perfect white surface, executed by applying a high-quality lining on the body. The artist used liquid paint that contains multiple metal oxides that give it different colors in the dish. To prevent smudging of the pigments, the images are framed with a thin black line using the dry rope technique, and adding a transparent lead glaze to the surface of the plate gives a thick, smooth glaze without cracks. In addition to its decorative advantages, the plate attracts attention due to the special artistic precision depicting a cut flower stem, which cleverly balances the asymmetrical design.
