Notes The text of Lyar Danesh (Touchstone of Wisdom) is derived from a collection of Sanskrit animal fables known as the Nachatantra believed to have been compiled sometime before 500 AD. Since then, many versions of these fairy tales have appeared in the ancient Pahlavi language of Persia and Arabic. The version called Lyar Danish was compiled in the Mughal court of Emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605). Fairy tales are part of a literary discipline known as Mirrors of Princes, which consists of stories intended to teach rulers the art of governing states. Each chapter in the text consists of a basic story related to a specific moral feat. Each of the main story's characters tells their own stories about behavior that speaks to the moral issue in question.
