Notes Between 1746 and 1754, Lord Charlemont, James Caulfield, 1st Earl of Charlemont, toured Europe extensively. While he was in Sicily in 1749, he encountered Richard Dalton, a painter and engraver, who asked him to accompany him and his fellow travelers towards Greece and Egypt in order to provide pictures for his articles. Dalton traveled with Charlemont until 1750, during which he made many drawings of natural scenes, customs, and events, and he was known as the first Englishman to make drawings in these areas. Some of these drawings were published in the book (Ancient Antiquities and Scenes in Greece and Egypt), which was published specifically in 1791 and included engraved drawings of important sites outside Italy. It seems clear that Dalton also had a keen interest in the annual rituals of the Pilgrimage and painted eight different parts of the rituals (he is said to have done this while hidden in a nearby house), each part with a comprehensive description, and Dalton became curator of the library of King George III.
