Notes Although there is no documentary information for this Qur’an, it is clear that it was produced by a wealthy person and perhaps a high-ranking person. The sun medallions in the frontispiece, or like the sun at the beginning of the manuscript - and most of its other gilding - consist mainly of dense vines formed from arabesques that sprout and display small, colorful flowering plants. Like many manuscripts produced during the Safavid era, the gilding is done in a combination of blue, red and gold colors with touches of yellow. The text pages consist of blocks of black calligraphy outlined by vertical panels of blue and gold arabesques and placed between the longer lines of a large blue or gold third script. Large Qur’ans like this Qur’an are characteristic of Safavid production.
