Notes
The piece is a painting consisting of square ceramic tiles bearing a drawing of the Kaaba with its black covering. The painting shows Ottoman-style architectural elements, including doors, domes, minarets, and arches from which lanterns hang. In the lower right corner of the painting is written the date of its manufacture, which is 1087 AH/1676 AD, and the name of Sultan Suleiman. This painting is similar to another painting found in the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo, bearing the signature of Muhammad al-Shami and dated 1139 AH / 1726 AD, and a painting drawn on the front of a manuscript of the Noble Qur’an dating back to the Ottoman era and bearing a drawing of the Noble Mosque in Mecca.
