Notes This double-sided rug is decorated with floral and geometric shapes and verses from the Qur’an and poetry in Persian and Arabic. Qajar carpets are characterized by many pictorial decorations. Also, weavers from the Iranian city of Kerman have mastered a rare technique of making double-sided carpets. Just like two different sides of the same coin, the carpet displays two different themes: heaven and earth. While one side depicts an illustrated garden with figures of flowers, doves and peacocks symbolizing heaven, the other side shows a medallion in the middle with peonies, tulips and lotuses. Persian carpets have long been popular because their decorative context includes political and social themes recorded within the woven threads of the carpet as a means of conveying stories and anecdotes. The characteristic of making these carpets still exists to this day as a “testimony of cultural identity” for Iran.
