Notes
Smoking rooms were part of the decor of upper-class homes in the late nineteenth century for the entertainment circle of gentlemen who retired to sit in the smoking rooms after dinner to enjoy drinking cognac, smoking cigars and chatting while the hostess entertained her female guests with tea in the ladies' parlor. In the era of the World Fair and modern tourism, there was a huge variety of styles available to decorate the smoking room. The Moorish-Oriental styles were exquisite: precious Persian carpets on the floor, Anatolian rugs on the walls, velvet-upholstered furniture, side tables inlaid with pearl cores, palm plants, Caucasian urns and daggers. Hunting trophies and travel souvenirs including finely crafted grid-pattern picture frames (mashrabiya) were mostly mass-produced in Europe and purchased from specialized furniture stores.
