Notes
The piece consists of a steel sword with an animal horn handle and a scabbard covered in silver gilded with gold. The blade is decorated with bowls with inscriptions: At the top of the blade there is a prominent bowl bearing the text “The Work of Al-Hajj Sanqur,” and below it is verse No. 1 of Surat Maryam “Kahi’is,” followed by a prominent bowl bearing the text “Sultan Fatih Muhammad Khan,” and below it are verses No. 1 and 2 of Surat Al-Shura “Ham-Asaq.” The inscriptions and decorations that appear on the blade are executed in gold. The sheath is decorated with prominent floral designs. The owner of the sword was the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, who ruled in the years 855 - 886 AH / 1451 - 1481 AD. The Arabs imported swords from Persia and India, and the finest types of swords were made in Khorasan, Damascus, and Toledo.
