Notes
Porcelain with a metallic luster is considered one of the finest types of Islamic ceramics. There are many types of ceramics, and the decoration is usually placed on a transparent glaze. The decoration is rarely on cobalt blue, manganese or turquoise colored glaze, as is the case in this piece. The piece is a ceramic bowl with a cylindrical stem and a vertical circular base. Most of the torso is occupied by a frame of double lines containing a series of successive decorations consisting of semi-Kufic inscription and a modified vegetal branch. There is a decoration on the lip circumference in the form of semicircles. These decorations are executed in a dark reddish-brown color with a metallic luster under a transparent turquoise blue glaze. The technique and decoration of this piece are familiar to other Fatimid works, but its shape is peculiar. The emphasis on the beauty of calligraphy as a form of decoration indicates an Eastern Sasanian influence, contemporary with the Fatimid period.
