Notes
Cashmere shawls (Persian: Termah) were very popular in both the East and Europe and were produced not only in northern India but also in Iran, mostly in Kerman. The Termah panels, embroidered with metal thread (in the Sarma technique: Dozi) and sometimes with pearls, were prized family possessions that were treasured over the generations and when used as wedding gifts included inscriptions with good wishes for the bride and groom. This sumptuous Termah panel features swirling vines and grapes embroidered in silver on a wool ground with a bit (buta) of numerous alternating metal strips. The abundance of pearls adds to the tangible quality. Great for this wonderful embroiderer.
