Notes
Tobacco was introduced to the Islamic world from the American colonies along with coffee and tea, which became a popular form of social refreshment. In Iran, beautiful hookahs like the one shown here are made of precious materials and painted with enamel in many colors to increase the pleasure of smoking. The tobacco was placed in the hookah bowl and the water at the base cooled the smoke before inhaling it.
