Notes This jar from Iznik belongs to an early stage in the development of Ottoman pottery, perhaps the beginning of the tenth century / second decade of the sixteenth century, as shown by the decoration and color scheme, which uses a lighter shade of blue with deep cobalt. The floral decoration, inspired by Chinese designs, is drawn in thick lines on a white background, or as it appears on the leg and shoulder, and is surrounded by white against blue. Jars of this type, which were made for court or city persons, were probably mostly used as storage containers, attesting to the high aesthetic standards of that time.
