Notes
This type of pottery painted under glaze was produced in Iznik, an important center for the production of Ottoman ceramics. The Roman Rhodian type (originally from the island of Rhodes) constitutes the third and final phase of Iznik pottery, which lasted approximately from 1570 to 1700. These pieces are characterized by the use of sealing wax thickly applied to the red glass, which is depicted in relief. The dish features two birds resting on delicately swaying plants that bear carnations, tulips, and pupillaries, although the motif of flowering plants is adhered to in Iznik pottery of the two centuries. 16th and 17th century, depictions of birds and animals are rare, and a largely traditional wave and rock pattern surrounds the border leaf of this dish. Such designs, inspired by 15th-century Ming porcelain, are more common at this stage of Iznik production.
