Notes
Bursa, located south of Istanbul, was the center of silk velvet weaving from the 15th to 17th centuries, and locally produced silk velvet fabrics were sewn with gold and silver thread, which was also popular in Europe. When the Austrian Trade Museum held its first exhibition of oriental carpets in 1891, a silk velvet brocade from Bursa was among the most important pieces on display. Wealthy Ottomans had a special love for pillowcases (yastik) of silk velvet (chatma). This Ottoman pillow cover shows rectangles with alternating inverted Persian letters (Mubarak-bad), (Good luck), and (Sada-bad). (Prosperity).
