Notes
This piece represents a bearded knight with an Asian-Turkmen appearance, a helmet on his head, and long braided hair. A snake was wrapped around the horse's right front foot and rose towards the rider from the left side. We see the snake opening its mouth to bite the rider, but the rider repels it with his shield and draws a straight sword upward, ready to attack the snake. There is a hollow column under the horse's belly, most likely intended to hold the statue upright. He also decorated the horse with a blue, slightly raised rein. The decorative rein band wraps around its mouth, dangles under the horse's neck, across its body, and ends at its lower thighs. The piece is painted with a sugar and blue glaze. So we can compare it to the “title” style from Persia, which was also used in Raqqa. Industries in the "nickname" style usually include yogurt and fancy dishes, and these industries are mostly concentrated in the city of Kashan in Iran. The relief decoration was colored blue, yellow, green, violet, and pink, in order to distinguish it from the white or sugar color in the background.
