Notes
A deep-sided brass bowl, engraved and inlaid with silver, the bottom of which is hammered in the form of a radial design of palm leaves. It is clear that the main element of the decorations are the decorative frames bearing royal inscriptions mentioning “Glory to our Lord, Sultan Al-Malik Al-Adil Al-Mujahid Al-Murabit, Al-Mu’ayyad Al-Mansur, Sultan of Islam and Muslims, Al-Malik Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Qaitbay.” There are circular ornaments between the decorative frames that glorify Qaitbay, and add the phrase “Glory be to his victory,” indicating that he was still alive. This exquisite bowl was most likely made as a hand-washing basin for the personal use of Sultan Qaytbay, and the style and quality of the decoration date back to the period of the revival of the arts under the relative peace and prosperity of Qaytbay's rule.
