Notes
The late seventeenth century witnessed the rise of Kutahya, the second largest ceramic center in the southeastern area of Istanbul. Europeans were astonished by the richness and precision of its exotic models, called Kutahya, meaning “Siver of the East.” This large, egg-shaped jug with surprisingly thin walls belongs to rare specimens of Kutahya vessels. It is painted with short, quick strokes of cobalt pigment on a snow-white background and represents the best achievements of the second half of the 18th century. The original style of Kutahya decoration authentically combines different ship schools of the East and West that were brought to the Ottoman culture due to commercial activities and settled in the city. Some researchers also say that the main part of Kutahya ceramics was produced by Armenian pottery makers.
