The extraordinarily great wealth of Anatolia, and especially its west, in majestic ruins and monuments, which are often better preserved than many other works found in the vast areas of the ancient world, aroused the attention of thoughtful learned travelers as early as the end of the Middle Ages and has not ceased to occupy researchers of all nations ever since. These researchers devoted themselves to the discovery of these works in the 19th and 20th centuries and, in case we should not forget them, and partly to their preservation and, therefore, to their rescue for the sake of the good. Thus, Pergamon and Miletus, Ephesus and Priene, Didima and Sardes and many other places have become solid concepts in both the history of art and architecture; and little excavation, have penetrated us into the understanding of ancient life in the depth of those in the cities we have mentioned on the western coast.
