XIII. One of the new political formations brought into being by the Mongol invasion, which shook Asia and Asia in the century, was the Golden Horde Empire. Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis and the son of Cuci, was at the head of this great empire, which was established by dominating the Bulgar Turks on the banks of the Volga, the Kipchaks in the southern Russian steppes, the Khazars, the Slavs, and some other tribes, including Khwarizm, the provinces in the south of the Caspian, and the Caucasian countries. After Genghis died, the western side of the steppes between Çu and Talas remained under his rule. His brother Berk, who ascended the throne in 1257, accepted Islam; and started long and bloody wars with the Chagatai princes, on the one hand, and Hulagu, the founder of the Iranian Mongol state, on the other hand, and started diplomatic relations with the Egyptian-Syrian Mamluk Empire, which was in a heavy struggle with the Iranian Mongols in Syria, starting from the time of Sultan Baybars.
