Notes Short copy of a manuscript, content: History of the Sultans Akbar and Ǧahāngīr by Muḥammad Šarīf, called Muʿtamad Ḫān, completed in the year 1029 [h.q.] [1619 or 1620] in three parts under the reign of Ǧahāngīr, whose secretary the author was and in honor of whom he gave the above title to the work. - The work is divided into 3 parts: 1) The ancestors of Akbar, 2) The history of Akbar from his accession to the throne until his death, 3) The history of Ǧahāngīr. - It is preceded by a short preface of 29 lines. In the same the Akbarnāma of Abu-'l-Faḍl is spoken of, its components are stated and it is noted that Volume I and Defter 1 of Volume II are in a language that is difficult to understand and is "in the Old Persian language". The work "Ṭabaqāt-i Akbarī" by Niẓām-ad-Din Aḥmad Baḫšī is then mentioned, which covers 37 years of Akbar's reign (the contents of this manuscript are correct, while the manuscript in Morley, Descriptive Catal. p. 60, only covers 27 years); then an unfinished story of Akbar by Ḫwāǧā ʿAtā Big. He compiled the first two volumes of his work from these works and added the story of Ǧahāngīr as the third volume. - Volume I begins on Fol. 2. It begins with the birth of Akbar on the 5th of Raǧab 949 [h.q.] [15. Oct. 1542] and then on the next page moved on to the history of Tīmūr and his successors, especially Bābur and Humāyūn. Volume II begins on folio 66 with a short preface of 2.5 lines. This volume contains the history of Akbar from his accession to the throne until his death, chronologically year by year, as in the "Akbarnāma", the wording of which is often retained. Volume III. begins on fol. 290 and contains the story of Ǧahāngīr up to his death in 1037 [h.q.] [1627], so it was written later than the first two parts, old signature: Quatremère 36, BSB provenance: Étienne Quatremère (1782-1857)
