Summary: Yemen's strategically important location has made it a desired destination for great powers for centuries. In the second half of the 20th century, especially after the success of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and the overthrow of the Shah, a rivalry emerged between the major powers in the region, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Each of these states attempted to expand in the region and break the influence of the other. Again, the conflict between these two states caused proxy wars to break out in the states caught in the middle of the competition. Likewise, it is known that the civil war currently taking place in Yemen is a result of the conflict and competition between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Relations between Yemen and Saudi Arabia have taken shape at historical points and affected the course of relations. The most important of these is the war between Saudi Arabia and Yemen in 1934. As a result of this war, border problems arose between the two countries and continued until a border agreement was signed in 2000. Again, these problems led to the events that devastated the region from 2004 to 2016 and affected the course of relations between the two countries. There are ancient relations between Yemen and Iran, dating back to the pre-Islamic period. Historically, the King of Yemen asked for help from the Persians to expel the Abyssinians from his country. In the modern period, relations between the two countries actually started with the Iraqi attack on Kuwait in 1990. As a matter of fact, relations showed great development in many areas in the 90s, and the developments in the region also had an impact on these relations. Key Words: Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran.
Summary: Strategic location Yemen made it exposed to the ambitions of several world powers throughout the centuries. During the second half of the 20th century, in particular after the success of the Islamic revolution in Iran, following the fall of the Shah's rule, a rivalry emerged between the two biggest regional powers Saudi Arabia and Iran. Each country started expanding its domination in region while trying to reduce another's influence. This conflict caused the outbreak of proxy wars in countries where this rivalry had effect over. Also the civil war that is currently taking place in Yemen is the result of continuous conflict and rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The course of relations between Saudi Arabia and Yemen has been influenced by historical events. The most important one was the Saudi Arabia-Yemen war in 1934 which led to the emergence of border issues between the two countries. These issues continued until the signing of the border agreement in 2000. They also caused events that stormed the region between 2004 and 2016, further affected the bilateral relations. Yemen has historical relations with Iran, dating back to pre-Islamic period when Yemeni King invoked Persians to expel Abyssinians from Yemen. In the contemporary period, relations between the two countries started practically after Iraq's attack on Kuwait in 1990. Bilateral relations witnessed a major development during the 90s in several areas and also the events that took place in the region had influence on the course of relations between the two countries.
