When we look at the conditions in which the Ennahda movement, which was structured as a civil movement, emerged in Tunisia, it should be noted that the Westernization ideology adopted by the state in Tunisia has experienced some crises since the 60s. In this respect, Ennahda emerged as an alternative ideology in a context where the ideology of westernization was experiencing crises in Tunisia. The institutional structuring of the Ennahda movement has gone through four stages: the Islamic group, the Islamic Tendency movement, the Ennahda Movement and finally the Ennahda movement party. The most important feature that distinguishes the Ennahda movement from other Islamic groups is that its intellectual base and sources are very broad, and therefore it has a broader vision of current issues. The most important sources that feed the movement are Malik bin Nabi from Algeria, Hasan Turabi from Sudan and the Muslim Brotherhood from Egypt. This is why Ennahda's intellectual resources are rich. Ennhda's cooperation with a secular party such as Nida Tunus has led to it having moderate views on issues such as democracy and women's rights. The Ennahda movement's openness of mind also manifested itself in the movement's political practices. For example, handing over the administration to the technocratic government in 2013 or making an alliance with Nida Tunisia in 2015 are examples of the concessions Ennahda made in order to achieve political consensus. Although Ennahda's practices are seen as weak or inexperienced and criticized, the main strategy followed by Ennahda is to establish national reconciliation and democracy culture in Tunisia.
SUMMARY
The objective of thesis is to study the political evolution of Ennahda Movement in Tunisia. In the early seventies, the historical context has significantly contributed to the rise of the movement in the political scene. This study found that there are two main factors explaining this rise. First, is the perpetual trauma of the Westernization tendency, and second is the ideological vacuum due to the 'policy of repression' in Tunisia. Ultimately, Ennahda emerged in this context as an alternative to respond to the local societal challenges. Nevertheless, the Movement, in its early phases, existed with no explicit ideology. Ennahda Movement underwent a radical transition from an Islamic group to a political party, and from solely preaching to actively participating in the political scene. This particular 'identity' remodeling of Ennahda Movement led to a reflective development process, and acquired both a dynamic structure and an intellectual flexibility. The party of Ennehda proved maturity co-existence and openness throughout its political performance. It touched on prevailing issues such as citizenship, secularism, democracy, and adopted policy attitudes towards social justice and the right to work. Its vigorous presence in the Tunisian political scene demonstrated also flexibility in addressing political crises, and overcoming problematic issues when drafting the country's constitution, and entering into an alliance with secularists. In spite of its theoretical and practical evolution, Ennahda's political performance is still being criticized.
