Notes
On the 5th of Rabi’ 2, 1362, praise be to God alone, His Excellency the dearest eminent Pasha, my good sir, Al-Muqri. May the peace and mercy of God be upon you. I am ashamed of not visiting you and gaining your news. I seek for myself some excuse for the difficulties of transportation and the lack of time. Firstly, because every time I tried to contact you on the phone, I did not succeed. I wondered about the change in the phone call system, meaning 82, then the number 26.07 or 00.28, but there was no success. I understand, but I hear some of your news through Mr. Mahdi, and your dearest jurist, Mr. Hajj Al-Arabi Al-Nasseri, may God have mercy on him, who passed away suddenly yesterday morning, Thursday, at the age of approximately 67 years. I am busy with the job, especially since I am at home alone without a male supporter. Perhaps this is a situation that most people are in, and I see myself enduring some hardships in raising the child and making ends meet. In the past, they said, “Whoever gets married gets on the ship, and whoever gives birth drowns,” and the city of Salé was in need of a second successor to the Pasha, so I hoped to be in that position. In fact, the Pasha asked the store to appoint me, but the list also included my cousin Hajj Abd al-Rahman al-Subaihi, so he agreed to that due to the demands he presented. I seriously approached the administration and Dar al-Makhzen, requesting that I be appointed to a position in one of the cities of Eyala due to my long service (16 years) from our master, may God grant him victory, His Excellency al-Sadr, His Excellency the Counselor and the Director of Political Affairs, and they made me understand that the issue is a matter of time and appropriateness, but you know the matter better. I notice that positions are often empty, as is the case now. There is an empty position in Bouzan, another in Bazemour, and others in Casablanca, and perhaps others in other areas. Who, I wonder, will put my issue in a state where it can be obtained. One of the positions that is suitable for me, because I have disturbed the comfort of the people, so I am asking and complaining for a long time, and I have become bored with this situation, and the matter belongs to God, so I apologize for this long nonsense, and I hope that I will be able to visit you on the coming days of Eid, God willing, and my home and the home of my brother Abdul Latif and the home of my cousin the Pasha are open to you. We are all longing and rejoicing at your arrival, your visit, and the meeting with you, out of pure and unblemished love, and I hope that the people of your populous home will be in good health, and I want I extend my greetings to the leader, Mr. Muhammad bin Al-Rashid, and to Mr. Muhammad Bennani, who has become far from us by necessity. May God bring back to us the days of happiness and happiness for the sake of whom we will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the Sharif, God willing. May you always, sir, be in God’s protection and care. May peace be upon you, Abu Bakr Al-Subaihi.
