The beginning of the manuscript: These are papers that include knowledge of chapters from the foundations of jurisprudence, and that is composed of two separate parts. The root is what other things are built upon, and the branch is what is built upon other things, like the branches of a tree due to its origin. Jurisprudence is the knowledge of the legal rulings, the method of which is ijtihad. The seven rulings are the obligatory, the recommended, the permissible, the prohibited, the objectionable, the correct, and the corrupt. The obligatory is what is rewarded for doing and punished for abandoning it.
The end of the manuscript: As for ijtihad, it means exerting one’s best effort to achieve the goal. If the diligent person has the basis of evidence in ijtihad, then if he works diligently in the branches and is correct, he will have two rewards, and if he works diligently and makes a mistake, he will have a reward. Among them are those who say that every diligent person in the branches is right, and it is not permissible to say that every diligent person in the fundamentals is right, because that leads to correcting the people of misguidance, including Christians, Magians, infidels, and atheists.
