| Notes | The transactions that take place by merchants and others are not free of usury, because on the surface they are committing a permissible form, and on the inside they are contrary to that. They pay to anyone who wants to bear the house a commodity, wheat or other, at double its known price or more, and they appear to be a sale. Then the merchant takes possession of his commodity and pays him a trivial portion of what I testify about the debt being double what was mentioned. This remains to come to an infinite amount, and the creditor is burdened by negligence in the commodity. Our Lord’s order was issued to limit transactions with the people of the desert to what is their business. In particular, it was obligatory to mithqal, and they did not take linen except for livestock and the clothing of their children |
