Notes
bark — R: Magical text (protection and defense): gzuṅs-bsdus edition The secondary signature of this fragment is Tib 132. It is 14 lines of an edition written on birch bark (collection
of Dhāraṇīs). The sheet belongs together with the following (No. 38 - 42); the foiling has been preserved
for sheets 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 (No. 37 - 41); these five sheets were probably
also written by the same hand. The parts written on birch bark belong to a Dhāraṇī collection (TibHT 37 - 43).
one of the best-preserved pieces in the Berlin Turfan collection. It is proven that despite the chronic shortage of paper, birch bark, as well as palm leaves,
was not used as a writing material in East Turkestan. The texts that have become known
based on these materials - Buddhist Sanskrit works - were made by Indian missionaries
brought from northwest India, where the use of paper was little until the Mughal period
was widespread. The Berlin Tibetica on birch bark does not contain any inscriptions that reflect time
or location of the find would provide information. We also don't know where they were made. In terms of writing and orthography, these texts are not among the oldest in the Turfan collection:
The writing speaks more for the 10th to 12th centuries than for older times., V: null: There are 15 lines of text on the verso page.
