Notes
The beggar at the mosque doorway, from the Garden (Būstān) by Sa`di (d. 1292). This scene shows the busy environment of a well-endowed mosque complex in the early sixteenth century, with working staff including a teacher who instructs two well-dressed young men inside. Standing by the doorway on the lower left, an elderly man waits patiently for generosity from a passerby. Under the mosque dome is a line of text quoting the poet Awḥadi (d. 1338). Folio, ink, colours and gold on gold-flecked paper, Persian text in nasta`liq script, with illuminated text panels and rubrics (on recto) and painting (on verso), from codex (CBL Per 188) the Garden (Būstān) by Sa`di (d. 1292), probably Herat, Afghanistan with painting added later in Ottoman Turkey, undated, c. 1490, additions c. 1525.
