Notes
Qur'an scroll, with holy names in reserve. Written in minute ghubar script, this undated copy of the Qur'an shows a strong Shi`a conviction in its design, with the names of the Fourteen Immaculates reserved in large format throughout. This begins with the Prophet Muhammad and his daughter Fatima, followed by her husband `Ali ibn Abi Talib, and their male descendants. Similar scrolls reserve other Shi`a messages against the text of the Qur'an, such as the prayer to Imam `Ali ("Nad-e `Aliyan"). Scroll, ink, colours and gold on paper, leather flap cover, Arabic text in ghubar script, with illuminated heading (sarlawh) at the start, Qur'an with text reserved to form the sacred names of the Prophet Muhammad and his descendants (Fatima, `Ali, Hasan, Husayn, and all the other Shi`a Imams), Iran, undated, c. 1750-1850.
