Notes
The sculptor Farhād receives a drink from Shīrīn, from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī. The second poem in Niẓāmī’s Khamsa is the story of Khusrau and Shīrīn (Khusrau va Shīrīn), which describes the long and complicated romance between the Iranian king Khusrau and the Armenian princess Shīrīn. Their relationship foundered when, to save his political career, Khusrau married another princess and Shīrīn was left alone. Full of sorrow, she moved to a remote region. Planning some complex technical improvements at her new home, Shīrīn hired the expert sculptor and engineer, Farhād. Completing the work, he fell hopelessly in love with Shīrīn. Now jealous, Khusrau ordered the sculptor to carve a roadway through a massive mountain. As Farhād worked, Shīrīn brought him a drink of milk, which he drank down in one gulp. Folio, ink, colours and gold on paper, Persian text in nasta`liq script, with painting and framed rubric (on recto), from Khusrau va Shīrīn, in the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī Ganjavī (d. 1209), Iran, text copied by `Alī al-Kātib (final colophon in codex Per 182, fol. 331v), dated (codex Per 182, fol. 29v) Shawwal 915H, January 1510, painting c. 1550.
