Folios from a Hijazi Qur'an Now placed in a modern binding, these four Qur'an folios may date from the first century of Islam, in either the Arabian peninsula or Syria. The Arabic is written in an unusual version of the script known as hijazi - meaning from Hijaz province, where the cities of Mecca and Medina are located. Codex, ink and colours on parchment, 4 folios, Arabic text in hijazi script, with illumination of horizontal chevron bands between chapters (suras, on fol. 4v only), portion of the Qur'an (suras 85:3 to 110:1), unsigned, possibly Medina (modern Saudi Arabia) or Damascus (Syria), undated, c. 675-725.
