Notes
Folios from the Book of Kings (Shahnama) by Firdausi. Now bound together, these six non-sequential folios come from a dispersed manuscript copy of the Book of Kings (Shahnama) by Firdausi, produced in India, probably c. 1600-1610. At different times, Beatty bought three portions from the same dispersed manuscript: In 17 (codex, 298 folios), In 40 (codex, 259 folio), and this set of 6 illustrated folios (In 17A). Further folios are also known in international private and public collections. The folios here are illustrated with the following epic scenes (not in narrative order): Isfandiyar slays the dragon (f. 1v), Rustam trapped in the pit with Rakhsh shoots Shaghhad dead (f. 2v), Isfandiyar's army (f. 3v), Zawara and Faramurz lead Rustam's army into battle (f. 4r), Rustam injured in battle by Isfandiyar (f. 5v), Iskandar with the dying Dara during the battle (f. 6r). Bound folder, ink, colours and gold on paper, mounted on grey paper, 6 folios, Persian text in nasta`liq script, 6 paintings and tinted drawings (nim qalam), from an incomplete copy of the Book of Kings (Shahnama) by Firdausi, unsigned, India, undated, c. 1600-1610.
