Papyrus letters: work and taxation. Folio fragment, ink on dark brown papyrus, mounted on paper and framed under glass, original cutting line preserved on the left edge but broken off at the top (recto), Arabic text, written with a medium thick pen parallel to the fibres on recto, and a monumental script with a thick pen on verso, two separate letters about administrative work, (recto:) letter directing the addressee to perform a task, with reference to a paymaster (qusṭāl), (verso:) letter referring to taxation (al-kharāj), written in well-spaced chancery format, first used on the verso side then cut for re-use on the recto, unsigned, Egypt, undated, c. 800-1000.
