Notes	Khusrau kills a lion outside Shīrīn’s tent, from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī. The second poem in Niẓāmī’s Khamsa is the story of Khusrau and Shīrīn (Khusrau va Shīrīn), which describes the long and complicated romance between the Iranian king Khusrau and the Armenian princess Shīrīn. After various delays, Khusrau and Shirin finally met in person at the court of Shirin’s aunt, the Queen of Armenia. As they got to know each other, the couple spent time hunting during the day, and celebrating in the evening. Each night the royal entourage set up their tents in the wilderness, and Khusrau and Shirin feast together under the stars. One night a dangerous lion came to the encampment. Unarmed, Khusrau fought it off with his bare hands.
