This text consists of forty epitomes, or condensed summaries, of Fakhr al-Din al-Razi's theology manual, al-Mabahith al-`arba`un fi usul al-din. The author, Siraj al-Din al-Urmawi (d. 1283) was born in Urumiya (Iran), and worked in Mosul (Iraq), Cairo (Egypt) and finally Konya (Turkey).
