Notes	Two Folios from a Mamluk Qur'an. These two folios were detached from a monumental Qur'an manuscript, probably in Paris in the late nineteenth century. Four of the six sura-headings (103, 104, 106, 109) do not belong to this page-opening: they have been cut out from other parts of the text, and pasted here over existing lines of text (suras 90-92). This can only have been to inflate the market value of these two folios, in a western context. The diversity of the illumination confirms what was once a splendidly produced Qur'an, with different artists working in distinct styles. Other folios from this same manuscript: CBL Is 1628, Boston Museum of Fine Arts 09.335, and Manchester John Rylands Ar.42 (the codex). Two folios, ink, colours and gold on paper, Arabic text in muhaqqaq, thuluth and kufic scripts, with six illuminated sura-headings and marginal motifs, final lines of sura 90 (al-`Asr) to sura 92 (al-Layl) of the Qur'an, and headings for suras 103, 91, 104, 106, 92, 109 respectively from top right to bottom left), unsigned, Cairo, Egypt, c. 1360-1380.
