Notes	Iskandar learns he has been accepted by God as a prophet, on his deathbed, from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī. The fifth poem in Niẓāmī’s Khamsa is the Book of Alexander (Iskandar nāma), which describes the life and career of the historic Alexander of Macedon (d. 323 BC), called Iskandar in Persian literary tradition. In the second section, Iskandar turned away from world conquest, and worked to develop wisdom and a better understanding of life. He met with philosophers to discuss these deeper ideas. Finally Iskandar reached a more spiritual sense of reality, and devoted himself to God. Here a divine messenger comes to Iskandar’s deathbed, to tell him God has accepted him as a Prophet.
