Notes	Shīrīn mourning the murdered Khusrau, from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī. The second poem in Niẓāmī’s Khamsa is the story of Khusrau and Shīrīn (Khusrau va Shīrīn), which describes the long and complicated romance between the Iranian king Khusrau and the Armenian princess Shīrīn. After much drama, the couple finally did get married, and lived happily together. Their joy ended with the jealousy of Khusrau’s son from his previous marriage. Attacking the palace, the younger man seized the throne from his father, and demanded that Shīrīn marry him instead. She refused, and both Khusrau and Shīrīn were imprisoned. Overnight, an assassin stole in and killed Khusrau as the couple slept. Shīrīn was heartbroken, and immediately planned her own death.
