Notes	Khusrau sees Shīrīn bathing, from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī. The second poem in Niẓāmī’s Khamsa is the story of Khusrau and Shīrīn (Khusrau va Shīrīn), which describes the long and complicated romance between the Iranian king Khusrau and the Armenian princess Shīrīn. An embarrassing encounter happened early in their relationship. Until this moment, the two had never met in person. Shīrīn had fallen in love with Khusrau after seeing his portrait. He in turn had only heard about Shīrīn’s great beauty. Both rode out from their distant kingdoms to meet at last. Their paths crossed at the precise moment when Shīrīn had paused for a refreshing bath in a mountain pool. Their eyes met but they did not recognise each other. He rode on.
